Cathedral Peak is one of the Drakensberg's most recognisable summits — a bold, blade-like spire rising above the Cathedral Peak Hotel valley and visible for kilometres in every direction. This three-day route gives hikers the time and space to do it properly: no rushing, no day-pack dash to the top and back before dark. Instead, we’ll establish camp on the ridge just below the peak, spend two nights sleeping under the stars with the full sweep of the Berg spread out around us.
The route suits fit, adventurous hikers who are comfortable on steep and exposed terrain. The summit itself demands a head for heights and a steady hand on rock — but the day leading up to it are as rewarding as the climb itself, moving through open valleys, fynbos-covered slopes, and high mountain grassland before the rocky world of the upper Berg takes over.

Day Oneā
Day 1, we set off from the Cathedral Peak Hotel, dropping into the valley and crossing the Mlambonja River before the trail begins its long, steady climb toward the high ground. The path winds through open grassland and patches of protea scrub, with the imposing face of Cathedral Peak growing larger with every step. As the valley falls away behind you, the views north and south along the escarpment begin to open — a foretaste of what the next day will deliver.
The afternoon's objective is the broad ridge just below Cathedral Peak, where we'll make camp for two nights. It's a long first day but a rewarding one: by the time you're unpacking your sleeping bag, you'll be sitting with Cathedral’s summit directly above you and the hotel far below.
ā
Day Two
Day 2, we set out early, to head to the summit of Cathedral Peak. The route follows the ridge before tackling the steep, rocky upper section that leads to the final scramble to the top. The exposure increases as you climb, and the last section requires careful route-finding and confident movement on rock. The summit itself is a narrow, airy perch with a 360-degree view that stretches from the High Berg escarpment in the west to the foothills and Midlands far below in the east.
The descent back to the ridge camp demands the same care and attention as the ascent — take your time on the technical sections. Back at camp by early afternoon, the rest of the day is yours: rest, explore the area, watch the light change on the surrounding peaks, and fall asleep to one of the great views in South Africa.
Day Three
Day 3, we’ll break camp and begin the long, satisfying descent back to the hotel. The return follows the same route, but the perspective is entirely different — now you're walking away from the peaks, back into the warmth of the valley, with two days of adventure behind you. The Mlambonja River crossing marks the final stretch before the hotel comes back into view.
By the time you're sitting on the hotel terrace, shoes off and legs rested, Cathedral Peak will be standing exactly where you left it — only now you'll know what it looks like from the very top.
ā
This hike is for those who want more than a summit tick — two nights on the ridge give you the mountain at its most intimate, in its changing light, its cold mornings, and its vast, unhurried silence.
